The King Cake Tradition

What's the deal with finding the baby in the cake, anyway?

We all love the idea of Mardi Gras ---- festivities, parades, beads, dubloons, and of course, we do have to acknowledge the tradition of flashing for the krewes. However, one Mardi Gras tradition that can be enjoyed throughout the country is that of the King Cake. Anyone who's every tasted the delicious, sugary treat, just prior to biting into a hard porcelain or plastic baby figurine, knows what I'm talking about.

Here's the nutshell version of the King Cake tradition. People have shared this New Orleans tradition since the first French settlers arrived there. Even if you don't live in the Big Easy, you can still make this tradition your own, with online purchase and delivery of wonderful King Cakes. My personal favorite is the strawberry-filled version from Haydel's, although anything with purple, green and gold sugar crystals gets my mouth watering.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
