I realize that it's ridiculously early to start thinking about shopping for Christmas presents and Christmas cards, but to avoid the last minute rush in November and December, why don't you take advantage of some summer piggybacking?
While the kids are all home from school, plan a portrait sitting with your favorite photographer. You can use the lovely summer flowers as a colorful background, or opt for a more traditional studio setting. Which location you choose, realize that you can keep a chronological record of your family with a good quality portrait every 5 or so years. Plus, you can use the portraits as the basis for your holiday cards and also Christmas presents for your closer relatives.
