Wicked Good 1980s Theme Party

How to Host a Kitschy Party Filled with Fun '80s Memories

© Janice Benoit

Follow these simple and effective plans for a great thematic party that's perfect for people that lived through the 1980s era of unabashed American decadence.

Are you looking for a fun and kitschy theme for your next grown up party? Don’t look any further than the 1980s! This era was filled with vibrant and lively styles, unbelievable fads and some outright wacky personalities. So the era of the 1980s lends itself beautifully to a little bit of reinterpretation and quite a bit of jovial ribbing. What better way to set the stage for an engaging and entertaining evening?

Concept

Trivial Pursuite Game Invitation

In a nod to the introduction of the board game of the 1980s, use a mock Trivial Pursuit game card as your invitation inspiration. You can use construction paper to imitate the characteristic blue bordered question card, or you can use your computer to create and print your invitation. With either option, the front of the card should ask the questions:

  1. Geography: Where will the most wicked good 1980s party be held?
  2. Entertainment: Who is hosting this party and are you invited?
  3. History: When is this Thriller of an event?
  4. Art & Literature: Which Star Wars character would say, “to hostess (your name), you will respond?”
  5. Science & Nature: Which Mondrian-colored puzzler, introduced in 1980, will be your ticket for admission to this event?
  6. Sports & Leisure: What is the appropriate style of dress for this celebration?

The back of the invitation will follow the same theme, except that the “answers” to the trivia questions will include the details of the party. Following is the suggested verbiage:

  1. Geography: The most wicked good 1980s party will be held at (party’s address).
  2. Entertainment: This killer party is hosted by (your name) and you are definitely invited to relive this era of excess. So pull out your shoulder pads, your “For Members Only” jacket, or your Flashdance ripped sweatshirts and come join us!
  3. History: We’re gonna party like it’s 1989 on (date and time of party).
  4. Art & Literature: Yoda wants you to RSVP to (hostess’s name) by (date to RSVP).
  5. Science & Nature: Bring a Rubik’s cube (any size and in any state of being solved) to gain entrance to this event, or you’ll be out like Leona Helmsley, Imelda Marcos, and Sydney Biddle Barrows!
  6. Sports & Leisure: Dress in your favorite look of the '80s. Perhaps we’ll see guests dressed like the Material Girl, the King of Pop, J.R., Blake & Alexis, Mr. T, Bruce, Donald & Ivana, or Tammy Faye!
