The twelfth day of Christmas, according to the song, has someone sending a gift of twelve lords a-leaping. Why not host a party or meal based around cricket or politics?

According to the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas”, the gift associated with the twelfth day of Christmas was twelve lords a-leaping. The obvious choice for a party based on this day is to invite guests to turn up as Lords and Ladies from olden days and hold a mock ball. However, by applying a bit of lateral thinking, party themes could also be based on cricket or politics.

Host a Cricket Themed Party

Lords is the name of the famous cricket ground in London, England and is known in that country as the home of cricket. Throw a cricket themed party in its honour. Invite guests to turn up in cricket whites and challenge each other to a match by playing the virtual Ashes game on the Wii.

If that doesn’t appeal, host an evening playing videos of the quintessential cricket TV series Outside Edge from the middle 1990s. For an insight into the workings of an English village cricket club, it is superb. Serve a typical cricket tea consisting of a variety of sandwiches, including egg and cress and home made cakes including Battenberg.

Host a Political Debate Evening

The House of Lords is one of the UK’s Houses of Parliament where laws are made and governmental decisions are debated and questioned by peers of the realm. It has been said that in order to hold a successful dinner party, the topics of politics, religion and sex should be steered clear of at the table. However, if the theme of the party itself is politics then that rule can be abandoned.

Think of three contentious political issues in the neighbourhood and invite guests to debate and discuss how those issues could be resolved. Or, take a thorny political issue from history such as women’s suffrage or birth control, though it’s probably more prudent to avoid the more controversial subjects such as past and present wars.

Serve guests with hot potatoes, broccoli (once famously banned from the White House) and give steaks a good grilling. Wash it all down with a fine red wine and debate the political issue of prohibition at the same time. Serve plum pie (recipe below) for dessert so guests get the opportunity to speak with an aristocratic plum in their mouths.

Traditional Plum Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1½ lb plums
  • 6 oz flaky pastry
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 egg, beaten

Method:

  1. Wash the plums then halve them and remove the stones
  2. Lay them uniformly across the bottom of a pie dish
  3. Sprinkle the sugar over them then add the water
  4. Roll out the flaky pastry and cover the pie dish with it, pressing the edges down well onto the pie dish
  5. Cut a little slit in the top of the pastry and brush with beaten egg
  6. Bake in the oven on gas mark 7, 210 C, 425 F for 15 minutes then turn the heat down to gas mark 4, 180 C, 350 F and continue to cook for a further half an hour. Serve hot or cold
