Vegetarian and barbecue may not seem like words that automatically go together, but a vegetarian barbecue can be a deliciously healthy alternative to the meaty variety.
Memorial Day and the Fourth of July are popular times to host a barbecue, but really any sunny day is a good time to have friends over and eat good food. Most people will throw hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, but these options can isolate vegetarian friends. They can also be fairly unhealthy. However, it is possible to have a tasty vegetarian barbecue without sacrificing on taste or having to go to a specialty store. Veggie Burgers are Just One Easy OptionThere are many vegetarian barbecue recipes on the web describing how to create a delicious veggie burger from scratch using various vegetables, beans, rice, or millet. However, for the carnivore that doesn’t know what millet is, a pre-packaged veggie burger might be a better way to go. The pre-packaged variety isn’t necessarily as healthy as the from-scratch kind, but it’s certainly ahead of the beef burger in terms of health. These pre-packaged veggie burgers are a tasty addition to a vegetarian barbecue and are becoming increasingly popular in grocery stores. Most main stream groceries now carry some version in their frozen goods aisle. Boca Burgers, Morningstar Farms, and Amy’s Organic burgers are just a few mainstream brands that are easy to find. These burgers won’t taste like its meaty cousins, but they are still a delicious staple for a vegetarian barbecue. Vegetables are Good at Any Kind of BarbecueVegetables are tasty at any kind of barbecue, but will certainly be a staple at a vegetarian barbecue. Corn on the cob is delicious and complements any barbecued meal. Many people forget that corn can be grilled and is tastier for it. Vegetable kebabs are also easy to make and don’t require any trips to specialty stores. Kebabs can be loaded with any favorite vegetable but good choices include squash, onion, bell pepper, and potatoes. Good spices to consider would include basil, parsley, pepper, garlic, and maybe lemon juice or Dijon mustard. Kebabs are easy to throw on the grill and are an excellent addition to a vegetarian barbecue. Vegetarian Barbecues Can Include Many Side DishesNo barbecue is complete without the requisite chips, dips, and desserts. Vegans may have a problem with some dips but most vegetarians are fine with a bag of deliciously greasy chips. Consult vegetarian friends on what is or is not appropriate. Green salads, fruit salads, and french fries from the grill are also all good add-ons for a vegetarian barbecue.
