Fun and easy craft activities and game ideas to use at your kids' ice skating party.

This is the final article in the series of hosting a children’s birthday party at an ice skating rink. Read the first two articles for information on renting the facility, and setting the schedule for the party.

Once the guests have arrived in the party room, make sure they’re warmed up. You can provide hot chocolate or hot apple cider to thaw them out. However be aware that many kids will want bottled water, as they’ll need to rehydrate themselves after exercise.

While the early arrivals into the room can be entertained by quiet paper and pen type activities (such as coloring, puzzles, or signing autographs), begin some group activities once the entire group has met in the party room. Suggested activities include:

  • Ice Fishing Stories – let each guest tell his or her “Fish Tale” about their time on the ice. Whereas Fish Stories are boasts by fishermen of the “big one that got away,” Ice Fish Stories are humorous renditions or boasting of what each skater did best or worst on the ice. You may wish to give a special award to the best Ice Fish Tale of the evening.
  • Olympic Trials: This game is dependent on the size of the party room. If your room is large enough, you can hold Olympic-style speed skating races across the floor, with the racers sliding across the floor in his or her stocking feet. Be prepared that this activity can quickly degrade into near chaos, but the kids do love it!
  • Scrapbooking - A fun and creative activity that will create a great take-home gift can be accomplished by planning ahead. Bring several Polaroid cameras or a digital camera and a portable printer to produce the materials needed for a scrapbooking craft activity. Assign a couple of adults to take a variety of candid photos while the kids are skating. Make sure that each kid is photographed multiple times, so that there is enough material to build from. You may also wish to photograph the entire group on the ice together, so that each guest has a record of the whole party. When you’re in the party room, have the photos divided out for each guest (if you’re using a digital camera and printer, have multiple prints of the best photos, so that the kids don’t have to fight over single shots. Provide construction paper booklets (made ahead), double faced tape to adhere the photos and markers. Let the kids’ creativity take off and you may want to create a couple of sparks by suggesting captions balloon ideas.
