Your mom deserves to be treated like a queen on her day. But what if you're low on cash? Here are a few ways you can save money while spoiling your mom.

Mother's day is a special time of the year and it's a perfect way to say "thank you" to your mama. Unfortunately, it can be expensive taking your mom out to dinner, treating her to a night at the theatre and such. So check out these tips for saving money while making mom feel like she's the belle of the ball.

Garden and Outoor Idea

Do you have your own garden? Then try picking flowers from there instead of purchasing them at a store. Pick a variety and wrap them up in your own tissue paper. And if you need to buy tissue paper, visit the dollar store and you'll find quite the variety. Now pair your flowers with a basket full of homemade goodies, such as cookies and sandwiches, and you can take your mom out to a picnic.

Be Musically Creative

If you have kids, get them to choose their favourite songs that remind them of grandma. Compile the CD or cassette with these song choices and give them to her. Want to make it even more sentimental? Have the whole family record personal messages about the special times you had with mom or grandma.

Spa Day

Surprise your mom with a spa in her own home. Give her a manicure, set up a hot bath for her in the bathroom with lots of candles, play soft music for her, give her a back rub and cook her favourite meal. Your mother will thank you for such a relaxing day.

Make Memories

Make a box of memoribilia. Here's how:

  • Take a shoebox and wrap the inside and outside box and lid with wrapping paper.
  • Now fill the box with old photos, mom's favourite quotes, souvenirs from the times you took trips together, a program from a show you saw together - be creative.

Cross Stitch

If you're into cross stitching, go to the dollar store and pick up a mini cross-stitching kit, which usually comes with a needle, colourful threads and a pattern. After you complete the pattern, visit your dollar store again and frame your creation. Voila - you just spent a little over $2 on your mother's day gift.

Breakfast in Bed

This old-time favourite works like a charm. Wake up your mom with a tray of fresh fruits, toasts, juice, pancakes, bacon, sausages or any of her other preferable breakfast choices. Decorate the tray with flowers from your garden and put under the plate a picture painted by your kids or an old photo.
