A fun way to beat the blahs that tend to appear in February and March is to host a party with a spring theme.
As with any party, begin by choosing the purpose of the festivities. Is it to celebrate an anniversary or have an indoor block party? Maybe it is a birthday party or just an excuse to get friends together. The spring theme can be altered to work for almost any party, but it helps to have a clear purpose. Spring Party InvitationsThere are several different ways to go when inviting guests to the party. The easiest method is, of course, to purchase pre-made invitations. Because stores begin putting out spring items soon after Christmas, there are an abundance of varieties available that would fit the spring theme. Invitations in the shape of flowers or butterflies would work nicely, or simple pastel colored invitations would suffice. For the craftier party-throwers, invitations could be handmade with almost any craft supplies. There really is no limit to the imagination, and anything spring-related would make sense. One could create a paper invitation with scrapbook supplies or send a packet of early-blooming wildflowers with a small invitation attached. Those who are more technically inclined could simply send an e-vite or some other sort of online invitation. Themes can often be selected for the background of these also. Spring Party DecorationsAgain, anything that will make guests “think spring” is appropriate. Decorations could range from flowers and butterflies, to bumblebees and bunny rabbits. Just choose one or two aspects of spring to focus on and go with those. Anything with baby animals can bring to mind spring, also. How elaborate the decorations will be depends on the purpose of the party. Things can be kept fairly simple for a child’s birthday party or they can be very elegant for an anniversary. Typically pastels are associated with spring, but one can use whatever colors they feel fit their theme. Party favors could also be incorporated into place settings on the table. Small decorative flower pots with a spring flower seed or bulb could be given to guests. Or simple small boxes of yogurt-covered almonds could be set at each place. Spring Party FoodAppetizers at a spring party should be light – both in color and in calories. Fruit with fruit dip, Jell-O jigglers in spring shapes, ranch-flavored party mix, cucumber finger sandwiches, etc. all would make fun snacks during the party. If a meal is planned, stick with foods that evoke spring images. Let guests make their own deli sandwiches or veggie pizzas. Serve side dishes such as spring pasta salads, Chinese coleslaw, or layered lettuce salad. If the goal is more of a dinner party atmosphere than a springtime picnic idea, serve ham balls or a ham loaf with sides like peas and carrots, whipped mashed potatoes, or parsnips. Finally, when it comes to desserts, the sky is the limit. Cakes or cookies can easily be made to look like flowers, butterflies, ladybugs, bunnies, and almost anything else that calls spring to mind. Pastel colored candies or after-dinner mints could also be set out for guests. One could even serve fruit smoothies or daiquiris for dessert. Thinking Spring in the WinterTo host a party with a spring theme while there is still snow on the ground may seem a bit strange to some. However, it is guaranteed to make the home feel warmer, cause the future to look brighter, and leave the party guests with spring fever.
