Make a Realistic Castle Card Box

Collect Cards and Small Gifts in a Unique Centerpiece

Sep 14, 2009 Marissa Carter

Using faux finish techniques, make a realistic looking castle card box that will be the focal point of your fantasy themed party.

Everything is in place. The party has a great theme, the napkins match the plates and the food is fantastic. Guests walk through the door and are astounded by the attention to detail in the room. They lay their cards in the most convenient spot and settle in to enjoy themselves.

There is a better way to handle the card situation at such a well put together party. Having a card box for a centerpiece will avoid the hassle of finding Great-Aunt Muriel’s generous check in an out of the way place later on. This card box centerpiece is perfect for any party that could use a royal touch.

Materials for Realistic Castle Card Box

  • 1 plain white castle card box (find them at a local party or wedding supply store or make one)
  • 1 package white tissue paper
  • Acrylic paint in dark grey, light grey, black, brown and light blue
  • accent colors according to theme
  • paint brushes
  • paint sponge
  • toothpick
  • scraps of material, felt and ribbon in colors according to theme

Procedure for Realistic Castle Card Box

  1. Assemble the pieces to the castle card box according to directions. Do not put the pieces together to form a finished castle.
  2. Crumble each piece of tissue paper into a ball. Carefully spread each ball back out and cut into one inch squares.
  3. Working in small sections, and avoiding doors and windows, paint a layer of dark grey paint on the castle card box.
  4. While the paint is wet, place tissue paper squares in a stone pattern. Leave about 1/4 inch between pieces.
  5. Sponge a light layer of light grey paint over each piece of tissue paper.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 until each piece of the castle card box is completely covered.
  7. Allow paint to dry.

Painted Details for Realistic Castle Card Box

  1. Cover the door with a thick layer of brown paint.
  2. Dip a toothpick in black paint and trail it in uneven vertical lines down the door to create a wood grain. Wipe and dip the toothpick after each line.
  3. Paint the windows light blue or follow instructions for stained glass windows (below).
  4. Use black paint or preferred accent color to sharpen details around the windows and doors.
  5. Allow paint to dry and then assemble castle.

Stained Glass Window Instructions

  1. Choose colors to use in windows.
  2. Mix each color with just enough water to give it an opaque appearance (do not make it too thin).
  3. Paint blocks of color. Use a stencil for complicated designs.
  4. Allow paint to dry.
  5. Using a toothpick or fine brush, outline each block of color with black paint.
  6. Use black paint or preferred accent color to sharpen details around the windows and doors.
  7. Allow paint to dry and then assemble castle.

Add Flags, Shields and Banners for Detail

  1. Cut the shapes for flags and shields out of felt or material.
  2. Add details by gluing on pieces of ribbon or another color of material.
  3. Glue the flags and shields around turrets and windows.
  4. For a flying standard flag, glue the end of the flag around a toothpick and poke the toothpick through the roof of the castle tower. Put a small drop of glue around the base of the toothpick to secure it in place.
