Lay out your ice cream celebration with panache and effortless ease!
The first article of this series introduced the concept of creating a party at home, based around an American tradition – the Soda Fountain. The most effective way to set up the soda fountain for ease of execution was addressed, as was the basics of a decoration scheme. Please review that article before continuing with this one.
In addition to the traditional ice-cream sundaes that the soda jerks will be creating for guests, you may wish to offer ice-cream sodas. For this addition, you will need to add a side counter with carbonated water or seltzer, flavored syrups (root beer, vanilla and chocolate are basics), soda glasses and straws.
Here is a recipe for a basic Ice Cream Soda, since many people are not familiar with the finer details of this treat!
- Put 2 Tbsp of syrup in the bottom of the glass and add seltzer water, stirring as you pour.
- Fill up to within 2 inches of the rim of the soda glass and then add 1 large scoop of ice cream, straddling the rim of the glass and submerging half of the scoop to start the reaction of the ice cream bubbling with the soda to create a foamy top.
- Finish the soda with a healthy dose of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry, serving the treat with both a spoon and a drinking straw.

Setting the Ambience:
- To make the event even more authentic, dress your soda jerks for the role! They should wear crisp white pants, white dress shirts (either long sleeved or short sleeved are okay), and bowties. For an extra touch, add a paper hat. You can find these caps inexpensively at supply houses like Prairie Moon, as well as other soda fountain supplies.
Summary
The Soda Fountain party is the perfect event to put on to celebrate the successful completion of your child’s school concert, play, or other extracurricular event. While it isn’t intended to be a stand-alone, full-blown event, it’s a fantastic way to add something a little special to your next celebration!
