Hosting a party in the spring is simply stylish with this guide to planning, decorating, menus and activities. It is the first in a series on seasonal entertaining.

As spring approaches days get longer, weather gets warmer and moods get lighter. What a perfect time for a party! Whether it is for a birthday, Mother’s Day or just because, everyone looks forward to a get-together after a long winter of staying in. What is the best way to make it a success? Throw a party complete with pretty décor, fresh recipes and easy entertainment. Pull out the inspiration files, start making lists and get ready to host a spring celebration.

Planning a Spring Celebration

For people who love playing host, planning a party is almost as much fun as the actual event.

  • Budget – Perhaps the most important planning tool for any party is setting a budget. Everything from the number of people invited to the type of food served depends on it. Keep it realistic and plan to do some of the party prep yourself to help save money.
  • Theme/Style – With a budget in mind, it is easier to choose a party theme. Keep in mind, low budget does not have to sacrifice style. Since it is spring, a simple afternoon tea held in a garden with only cookies to eat translates to a fabulous way to chat with friends.
  • Invitations – Of course, the invitations depend on the style of the party. For a springtime soiree, it is usually safe to go with soft colors and floral motifs. Stay away from designs with bonnets and Easter eggs unless the party is intended as a holiday celebration.

Decorations for a Springtime Party

Decorating for a party during the spring months is easy. Just follow the cues of nature. Even if the evenings are still somewhat chilly or April showers seem relentless, it is still possible to evoke the best of the season. Include these elements in spring party décor.

  • Light, yet bright color – Palettes such as lemon yellow and pea green or raspberry and soft turquoise are modern and springy.
  • Flowers – Whether real, faux or printed on party supplies, flowers for decorations just say spring.

Light Menu for a Spring Gathering

Leave heavy casseroles and rich desserts off the menu for a spring party. Choose healthy recipes with ingredients that reach their peak during the months of March, April and May.

  • lettuce
  • spring peas
  • broccoli
  • pineapple
  • mangoes

Party Activities for Warmer Weather

When warm weather finally arrives, everyone is itching to spend time outdoors. Give them what they want by planning activities that take advantage of playing outside. There is nothing fancy about these ideas, just simple, old-fashioned fun.

  • show a classic film on a large screen
  • play horseshoes
  • make flower arrangements (and send them home as favors)

Throwing a great springtime party is easy to do with these tips for planning, decorating, recipes and activities. Look for more detailed ideas on each of the elements as this series on hosting spring parties continues.
