Customize your tablescape with the right choice of table linens, such as tablecloths and napkins. Add levels to create the visual interest that creates impact.

Once you have settled upon your theme and taken stock of your decorating items, consider how you will be using the table surface. Will it be used for decorations only, for a buffet, or as a place to eat? This clarification will impact the shape and size of our tablescape.

For a tablescape that is purely decorative

The vignette can encompass the majority of the surface area of your table. Leave an open area around the perimeter of the table, to allow for people to lean against it or temporarily place their beverage there.

If the food will be served from both sides of the buffet (double-sided buffet style), your tablescape will be centered along the midline of the buffet set up. If the food will be served from one side only (single-sided buffet style), the tablescape should be created along the back side (non-service side) of the buffet.

In the above three types of designs, height is an important element to include and can be accomplished very simply by using levels of varying heights.

Work from the Bottom Up

  • Start with your foundation table linen. Color and texture play a role in setting the mood for the tablescape. For an elegant tablescape, use fabrics that are refined; for a casual tablescape, fun and kitschy cloths can be used. If your budget does not allow you to have a large selection of tablecloths, commit to acquiring a quality cloth in either ivory or white, and a second one in a dark color like black, navy blue or deep espresso brown. By varying the tablescape items and adding in short lengths of themed fabrics, you can create a multitude of vignettes with just two basic tablecloths.
  • Once the foundation table linen is in place, create your levels. Set at least three different heights within your vignette. Generally, the highest level should be placed in the center of the arrangement. However, if your desired look is ultra modern or avant garde, an off center high point could be utilized instead. Check online for additional information about creating tablescape levels.
  • Once the levels are set, drape them with your contrasting or themed fabrics. Pay attention to remnant sales at your local fabric store, and pick up a yard or two of many great fabrics. Wash the fabric, serge or hem the edges, iron it and keep it in your Party Closet for use at a moment’s notice.
