The first two articles in this series introduced the concept of hosting an informal get together in your hotel room, when you’re traveling for business or pleasure. This final article will address two additional options for this type of function.
To host a popcorn and movie night, simply pop some microwave popcorn in your room’s mini microwave or use the machine that is typically located in the breakfast area of most mid-range hotels. If there are no microwaves to be found, don’t forget to check with the front desk staff, as they may permit you to use the microwaves that are in the staff lunchroom. Alternately, you could always purchase pre-popped popcorn at a local grocery or convenience store. Add some chilled assorted soft drinks from the vending machines, room service or the corner store and select your pay per view movie and you’ve got the fixings for an impromptu movie theater party! You may want to rearrange the furniture a little before the movie starts, to insure the best possible viewing angles for all your guests. Think about drawing the desk chair or arm chairs closer in towards the bed to encourage conversation, while still maintaining a view of the television.
Another type of function that can be hosted in your hotel room is a late night wine and cheese or wine and munchies event. These are really fun get together events because they’re generally impromptu, they’re extending an already fun evening, and they provide an informal way to wind down. You’ll need to work with room service or a local grocery store to implement this party. Supply the event with a couple of bottles of wine, pre-packaged cheese chunks, a box of crackers and maybe some great chocolate. This is the last event of your evening, so live it up! When you purchase the food, you will want to pick up some small paper plates or some fun beverage napkins to keep your guests tidy. It’s your decision whether you wish to buy some plastic cups or just use all the glasses provided in your guest room.
One additional thing to remember when hosting an in-room party is that you’ll be creating more of a mess than a typical overnight guest. Make sure to reflect this additional mess in the tip that you leave for the housekeeping staff. Your gratitude will be so appreciated by the person that puts your room back in order.
