Children's birthday parties can be a bit of a challenge if the weather doesn't co-operate or if you don't have a solid plan of attack. Hosting a party at a ceramics studio or a pottery-painting studio is a great alternative that will keep the kids engaged, let them have a wonderful theme for the party, and keep your budget intact. And this type of party is not dependent upon the weather! Follow these simple guidelines to plan your child's pottery-painting birthday party.
Concept
Host a birthday party while teaching the guests to paint a pre-cast ceramic piece that is theirs to keep. This type of party is appropriate for boys or girls aged 5 or older.

Implementation
This party should last for approximately two hours. Your guests will arrive and immediately proceed to the party area. Depending on the studio you select, this space may be a separate room or simply an area within the studio. If your group of guests is between 5 and 9 years old, you will want to pre-select the pottery pieces that the kids will paint. Opt for a simple ceramics item – perhaps a mug, pendant or candy dish. Because the ceramics painting technique requires you to paint the item several times for the deepest glaze, keep the pottery pieces on the smaller size. Otherwise the novelty of the painting process will wear off and the kids will feel like they're working too hard!
If you are hosting kids 10 years or older, give the guests the option of two or three different pieces, as long as the ceramic pieces are all of a similar size and complexity. The staff at your pottery place should be able to help you select age-appropriate pieces that fit within our time frame and your party budget. Make sure to finalize this step before the actual party, to ensure that the studio has the correct amount of whichever pieces you select.
The staff at the pottery studio will teach the kids the proper technique to paint their pottery piece. However, you will want to have several adults on hand to help the kids with the process. While it's good to let them create their own masterpieces, you may be able to expedite things, assist with some of the more difficult techniques, or spur on their imagination!
