The Christmas season is here, and now is the time to decide how you will decorate your home, in preparation for receiving your holiday guests. While a traditional theme is always a great choice, some people opt to decorate in an eclectic manner, a kitschy way, or in a homespun, country style. This article will guide you through some great alternatives for expressing your own style of holiday decorating in a down-home country motif..
Homespun Country Christmas Decorating Ideas
- Button Garland: Create a homey looking garland that can be used on your tree, on your mantle, across a doorway or in a centerpiece. Carolyn Bell in The Complete Book of Christmas teaches how to make this adorable garland using just a few odds and ends found around your home. Gather mismatched buttons in a variety of colors and sizes, some garden twine and hot glue. Spread the garden twine out along your workspace and adhere pairs of mismatched buttons about every four inches, using hot glue. The twine will be sandwiched in between the mismatched buttons. You can embellish this garland by tying on gingerbread hearts or stars to drape into bare spots on your display.
- Dried Flower Tree Ornaments: Using nothing more complex than florist’s foam, cookie cutters and dried lavender, you can create these pretty and natural ornaments that will complement your evergreen tree perfectly. Cut a block of florist’s foam into one inch slices. Using cookie cutters shaped like trees, stars or hearts, press them into the foam slices. Coat all the surfaces with florist’s adhesive. Fill a Ziploc bag with loose, dried lavender and a little gold glitter. Shake the dry materials to mix and then press the pre-cut shapes into the mixture, to completely cover the florist’s foam. Thread a delicate golden cord through a hole made in the top of each ornament. Knot the cord and hang.
- Dried Fruit Rounds: This traditional and natural tree decoration is created by simply slicing a beautiful orange into one quarter inch discs. Lay the orange slices out on a metal rack and dry in the oven on its lowest setting for about an hour. Once the moisture from the fruit slices has been thoroughly dried, push a knife through each slice, just below the rind. Thread a homey gingham ribbon through the hole, tie it into a loose bow, and hang the slices on your Christmas tree or in your kitchen window.
