The ability to smell is an important sense and can convey much information about a home. The right choice of scent can create a space that is welcoming and attractive.

The nose and sense of smell are often taken for granted and are only missed when blocked by colds and flu. Perfumes can trigger memories and create atmosphere and a sense of well being. Here are some ideas for using scents in the home.

Wood Polish

Wooden floors and furniture need care and polishing them with scented polish can fill a house with fragrance. Common varieties include citrus, lemon and lavender. Polishing on a warm day will release a stronger scent into the air.

Coffee

The smell of fresh coffee is what draws many people into shops for a cup of coffee. Use a coffee machine or percolator to create the same ambience in the home. If having guests around for tea, get the coffee maker going an hour or so before their arrival.

Cooking

There is nothing like the aroma of a rich casserole or roast to get taste buds going. Use onions, garlic and curry and experiment with exotic ingredients. The smell may even waft down the street and make the neighbors envious.

Herbs

Pots of herbs can bring a freshness to a kitchen or dining area. Visit a garden centre for advice on what suits the area and climate. Dried herbs can also be effective. Try crumbling dried lavender into the carpet before vacuuming.

Oil Burners

These are commonly made of pottery and are popular home accessories. The oils come in dozens of varieties and a little goes a long way. Experiment with vanilla, spice, orange blossom, and sandalwood and keep several bottles on hand to match the mood or occasion.

Clean Laundry

It is surprising how many people enjoy the smell of freshly laundered clothes. Choose fabric softeners that smell good and release the fragrance by ironing or tumble drying. Freshly washed bed clothes can fill a room with delightful perfume for several days.

Fresh Air

Never underestimate the power of fresh air. Make it a habit to open windows at regular intervals. Breezes from outside can cleanse the home and bring in spring fragrances and summer flowers. In the cooler seasons, the wind may carry the sharp tang of autumn and the briskness of winter.

Removing Bad Smells

All households suffer from bad odors at times. Here are a few trusted remedies for odor control:

  • Place a bowl of bicarbonate of soda in the fridge to absorb bad smells
  • Bowls of skinned, halved onions and salt can help remove fresh paint odors
  • Vinegar neutralizes smoky smells

With a little effort, a house can smell warm and inviting and visitors will feel welcome and at home. Where possible, use natural fragrances and avoid synthetic air fresheners and chemicals. The results will be well worth it.
