Create a memorable long distance birthday celebration with a Birthday in a Box. You can mail a cake, candles, and goodies to your loved ones that live far away.

Everyone loves a birthday party and when our children are young, you can control every aspect of the birthday celebration. However, once your loved one moves away from home, you can still create a wonderful, long-distance birthday celebration for them. Learn how to simply Create a Birthday Party in a Box to mail to your friends and family. By handling the details yourself, you can customize the birthday party in a box to the recipient's tastes.

Concept

Package all the fixings for a birthday party in a box that can be mailed. You can include a birthday cake, candles, decorations, gifts, cards, and some fun thematic elements. Send the package via US Postal Service, UPS or Fed Ex, depending on your location, delivery time and budget.

Packaging Information

Selecting a crushproof mailing box is critical to this venture. Visit your local mail store or post office to find the appropriately sized box for your needs. You can also use an online box merchant like Uline or Chiswick to take advantage of volume discounts. In addition to the box and mailing tape, you will need cushioning material like bubble wrap, packing peanuts, kraft paper, or air filled bags. To reduce cost, save the packing materials you receive during the year, to reuse in your own boxed birthday celebrations.

Wrapping the Cake

Layer cakes generally do not travel well, so make sure to bake your cake in a tube pan or bundt form. Do not ice the cake, but rather add in a plastic container of frosting, either homemade or prepackaged, to the box. Wrap the cake in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and sandwich it between two cardboard circles. The cardboard should extend past the edges of the cake, to prevent bumps and bruises to the cake. Finally, wrap the entire set, cardboard circles and wrapped cake, in aluminum foil.

Completing the Birthday in a Box Package

Start by placing a layer of bubble wrap or crumbled kraft paper in the bottom of the box. Center the wrapped cake set in the box, and surround it with additional bubble wrap. Tuck the additional contents in the space between the bubble wrap and the box:

  • Candles
  • Container of frosting
  • Crepe paper streamers
  • Birthday card and small gifts
  • CD of birthday music (record yourself singing “Happy Birthday” to your loved one and burn the audio file onto a CD)
  • Treat bags of favorite candies and goodies

Seal the box with packaging tape, label it to identify that it contains perishables, hand it over to your delivery service and prepare to make your loved one happy!
