I-Spy books are a great coffee table read to have on hand visitors. During Christmas, break out interesting decorations to use for a fun real life I-spy game.

I-Spy is one of those timeless games that can be played anywhere; on road trips, at the mall, visiting museums. It is especially fun when more people are involved all looking for the same things. Christmas is a great opportunity to place various decorations throughout the house and organize items for an ice-breaking Christmas party game.

Create Some I-Spy Lists

When the partiers arrive, hand them a list of items they should look for. The lists can be the same for everybody, or different, but with the same number of items. The game can last throughout the party and be performed in conjunction with other games and events.

Do not make it too easy for anybody to find everything on the list, put some items in unexpected locations like the bathroom. Here is an example of a list:

  • 3 Angels we have heard on high
  • 7 pine cones
  • 1 bunch of mistletoe (best when searching with a partner)
  • etc.

As people mill around and visit, they can check things off their list. The first person or couple that find everything wins a prize.

Count Similar Christmas Decorations

As a bonus round, or even as a separate game, have the guests see how many of each type of Christmas decoration is on display. Make a note of the items listed to ensure that the numbers are correct. For example:

  • Number of snowman decorations
  • Nativity scenes
  • Red Christmas orbs

Again, do not make this too easy, place the decorations throughout the house to encourage milling around. Food and other seasonal items can be included in the game as well, but food may be consumed before everybody gets a chance to see it.

Create Puzzles to Solve

Another fun option is to incorporate some sort of puzzle or brain teaser that must be solved. The items act as clues and the first person or couple to come up with the solution wins a prize. This type of game takes more time and creativity, but is also the most fun. A simple example would be:

  • Three wise men
  • A manger
  • Angels

Of course the answer is a Nativity scene. With an expanded imagination, the puzzles and clues can become quite complex and may take all night to resolve.

The game works best when it runs throughout the entire Christmas party. People mingle, look around, even snoop in order to find the answers they need. Make sure to express any rooms that are off limits before the game stats. Remember to have fun and have a Merry Christmas.
