Consider hosting a neighborhood St. Patrick’s Day party and you will soon understand why this celebration is a very big deal in many American cities. New York City with its nearly 250-year-old parade and Boston, with a parade that winds through the city’s most Irish neighborhood, rank among the hotspots for a St. Paddy’s Day bash each year.
Your party will bring a bit of Ireland home and you do not have to break your home budget to make it happen. First, you may be surprised how affordable Irish bands can be in your area, even near the date of St. Patrick's Day.
If the band’s prices are out of the question, load your St. Paddy’s Day playlist on your MP3 with some Irish party favorites such as the Irish Rovers, The Irish Tenors (composed of the blockbuster trio John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan) or some Irish jigs by contemporary fiddlers Natalie MacMaster or Sean Ryan.
Irish Soda Bread, Midori and Green Food
Serve traditional Irish food such as corn beef, cabbage and make your own soda bread. Serve it all with some draft beer tinted with harmless green food coloring or, offer lime-flavored lemonade, green beer and cocktails that use green liqueurs such as Midori or serve Irish Cream.
Load up your buffet table with as much green food as possible including pistachio nuts, avacado dip, zucchini bread, fresh greens salad tossed with cucumber, green peppers and spring onions and top the table off with bright green cupcakes or frosted muffins.
Decorations are simply done and the results will be a shockingly green bounty of Irish spirit. If you have any friends who are school teachers, ask whether you can borrow some decorations that they may have packed away.
At dollar stores, you can find budget-priced napkins, hard plastic plates (which can be washed as reused), green leprechaun hats, as many green balloons as you can carry and green and white streamers.
Play a Party Game: Musical Shamrocks
Party games are not just for children. Play some Musical Shamrocks by cutting out the shapes from green construction paper and taping them within stepping distance throughout the party area.
Have each guest stand on a shamrock and start up the Irish Jig. Take away one Shamrock and when the music stops, the person not standing on a Shamrock pad is out. For the last Leprechaun standing, give them a prize-winning “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” button or a box of “Pot of Gold” chocolates.
Everyone loves a good movie and an adult St. Paddy’s Day party is a great opportunity to feature some Irish classics for the crowd. The Quiet Man, featuring John Wayne as an American boxer who returns to his Irish homeland to find a plucky bride (Maureen O’Hara), took an Oscar for its lush green cinematography. Or try a few episodes of Father Ted, an uproarious television comedy that featured the antics of three Irish priests and their days on Craggy Island on the Emerald Isle.
