A Mad Lib-inspired baby shower game is easy to prepare and fun to play.
You've probably played Mad Libs, the word game in which you create a story by providing adjectives, verbs, and so on. Try a fill-in-the-blank birth story at your next baby shower for a personalized twist on the classic game.
Instructions
Cut and paste the following story into a word-processing document. Add several blank spaces next to each of the bracketed phrases. Substitute the mother-to-be's name for each use of the name "Mary" and the name of the father-to-be, significant other, or labor coach for each use of the name "John" in the following template. If the mother knows the baby is a boy, make the appropriate changes in the third paragraph. At the shower, have guests take turns providing responses for each of the blank spaces. For example, ask a guest to name an animal and write her response in the first blank. When you've entered responses in all the blank spaces, read the completed story aloud to the group. Have fun!
The Game: Mary's Birth Story
Toward the end of her pregnancy, Mary was feeling like a [ animal ]. Finally, on [ month ] [ number ], Mary's [ liquid ] broke while she was at [ place ]. She and John rushed to the [ place ], where they were met by the [ occupation ]. Meanwhile, Mary's family arrived by [ mode of transportation ] and gathered in the waiting room.
Mary hadn't been sure whether she would use pain killer, but as soon as she felt the pain in her [ body part ], she asked for [ medicine ]. John tried to help by counting as Mary [ past tense verb ]. This went on for [ number ] hours. The family kept busy in the waiting room by playing [ game ] and ordering takeout [ food ].
Finally, the doctor decided to use the [ tool ]. With a scream of [ emotion ], Mary gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. She weighed [ number ] pounds and [ number ] ounces and measured [ number ] inches in length. Mary and John named her [ girl's name ] [ girl's name ]. All the family in the waiting room agreed that she had Mary's [ body part ] and John's [ body part ]. Mary sang [ song title ] as she rocked the baby, and they all fell asleep dreaming about their new life together.
