A Simple Game for Indoors

Little is Needed Except a Good Imagination

Jun 23, 2009 Lesley Munnichs

This activity, a little different to boisterious, rowdy games, is a good reason to gather the family together around the dining room table .

This game is for when the mood is not too boisterous and family, friends or party guests wish to play a game that is a little more sedate, refined and quieter. This game is particularly good fun for people with a vivid imagination, or those that have the knack of being able to easily make people laugh.

You will need some card, pen and plenty of paper for each player, and a timer.

There isn't really a winner in this game, rather it is just fun to particpate, but if the players wished to you could take a vote at the end of the game and award a prize to the best story.

There is a little work to do before hand. Prepare some word cards, at least eight per player. Choose words that have nothing or little to do with each other, including some abstract words, some that describe an activity and some that describe a property. Longer words work well and pick some cheeky words and rude words as well for extra fun.

Write the words on pieces of paper or card about the size of a credit card and place them in a large container. Give each player a pen and plenty of paper.

To begin have each player select six word cards, set a timer to an agreed time, say ten minutes. Now each player has to use each of the words they have picked in a coherent, hopefully funny story. It doesn't matter what the subject matter is, and it can be any setting and set in any time, but players must use each word at leace once.

When the time is up, have each player read out their story to the rest of the group. As mentioned previously, this is not a game as such, rather a fun activity. However, if the players did want a winner, players could give points (out of five perhaps) for elements in the story eg its style, its originality, how funny or amusing it is. It may be worth taking into account other factors eg if children are playing perhaps judge their stories separately. The player with the most points is awarded a prize.

Some suggestions for word cards: tango, red, integrity, secret, scarfe, fart, picking, boob, mumbo, currency, spiritual, waltz, tennis, glove, black, shoe, jacket, bra, children, emerge, box, everything, contents, fox, value, win, change, family, stuck, life, drama, busy, second, bitter, week, crises, instead, time.
